Londres, Reino Unido – Un avance sin precedentes en medicina prenatal está emergiendo desde los hospitales londinenses. Un estudio reciente ha demostrado que la inteligencia artificial (IA) es capaz de detectar anomalías en fetos casi dos veces más rápido que los métodos tradicionales, ofreciendo un diagnóstico temprano que puede marcar la diferencia entre la incertidumbre y la preparación.
La investigación, liderada por expertos del King’s College de Londres y la Fundación del Hospital Saint Thomas, evaluó a 78 mujeres embarazadas con la asistencia de 58 ecografistas. El hallazgo clave: las ecografías apoyadas por IA fueron un 42% más rápidas que las convencionales, sin comprometer la precisión.
Los resultados fueron publicados en NEJM AI, la edición especializada en inteligencia artificial del reconocido New England Journal of Medicine. El estudio se centró inicialmente en la detección de problemas cardíacos durante la ecografía de la semana 20 de gestación, pero sus autores aseguran que el potencial va mucho más allá.
“Nuestra investigación demuestra que las ecografías asistidas por IA son precisas, fiables y, sobre todo, más eficientes”, afirmó el Dr. Thomas Day, autor principal del estudio. “La tecnología elimina la necesidad de pausas prolongadas para registrar imágenes, optimizando el tiempo clínico y mejorando la experiencia del paciente.”
Además de aumentar la eficiencia, la IA representa una oportunidad para humanizar la atención. Al reducir la carga técnica del personal médico, se abre espacio para una relación más cercana y empática con las familias.
Una historia que ilustra este impacto es la de Ashleigh Louison, una de las participantes del ensayo. Gracias a la IA, los médicos identificaron a tiempo una enfermedad cardíaca en su hijo por nacer, Lennox.
